Reyhan Ibrahim gizi Topchubashova was born on 15 December 1905 in Quba, Azerbaijan. She received her early education at the Girls’ School established by Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev in Baku. Interested in music, she entered the piano department of the conservatory in 1923, although she was unable to complete her studies there. From 1931 to 1935, she studied at the Azerbaijan State Art Technical School under the guidance of Azim Azimzade. Her works were exhibited at republican exhibitions from 1936 onward. In 1943, she was awarded the honorary title of Honoured Art Worker of the Azerbaijan SSR.
Depictions of Urban Life in Painting
Urban surroundings and everyday life occupy a significant place in Topchubashova’s artistic output. Her painting “A Street in Old Baku” is a notable example. Created in 1935, the work depicts a street between two shops, a cobbled road, children at play and people having letters written for them. The predominance of brown and grey tones lends the composition a restrained palette. The artist presents the city not merely as an architectural setting, but as a living environment shaped by the daily activities of its inhabitants.
Works such as “The Old Bazaar,” “The Wedding” and “The Street” likewise reflect her interest in scenes of everyday life. Their subject matter demonstrates the artist’s attention to different aspects of social experience.
Portraiture and Landscape
Topchubashova’s artistic practice extended beyond urban and domestic scenes. She also worked in portraiture. Her portraits of Mirza Alakbar Sabir and ballerina Qamar Almaszade are among the works associated with her exploration of the human figure. The portrait of Qamar Almaszade is particularly recognised among the notable examples of her work.
The Absheron Peninsula occupies an important place in her landscape painting. Works such as “The Maiden Tower,” “The Sea,” “View of Mardakan” and “Seascape at Night” reflect her interest in urban architecture, coastal scenery and changing aspects of nature. These subjects demonstrate the breadth of her artistic practice across different genres.
From Painting to Theatre and Stage Costume
Topchubashova’s professional activity also encompassed applied art and stage design. She created costume sketches for song and dance ensembles, demonstrating an interest in Azerbaijani clothing traditions and their interpretation for the stage.
Her legacy is noteworthy for the range of creative fields in which she worked. Painting, portraiture, landscape and costume design all formed part of her artistic practice.
Her Place in Azerbaijani Fine Art
Reyhan Topchubashova’s work holds a place in twentieth-century Azerbaijani painting through its depictions of urban life, domestic scenes and the landscapes of Absheron. Alongside her artistic practice, she participated in the institutional life of Azerbaijani art and held a senior position on the board of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan in the 1940s.
The study of her works offers insight into her individual artistic approach, the representation of everyday life in her era and the broader development of Azerbaijani painting.
Reyhan Topchubashova died in Baku on 5 March 1970.
